Summer 2013 Professional Development

Objectives:

  • Learn characteristics of the 21st Century teacher.
  • Explore what using 21st Century web-based applications can do for the classroom.
  • Design a technology-rich project for use in their classroom.

Pre-Session Activity - Please Do!

  1. Get an Edmodo account at http://www.edmodo.com.
    • Sign up for a free teacher account if you do not have one. The group code will be provided via email to be used to join the Design Technology Integration workshop group.
    • If you already have a teacher Edmodo account, the group code will be provided via email to be used to join the Design Technology Integration workshop group.
  2. Get a Google account at http://www.google.com and make sure you have access to Google Drive.
    1. If you don't have a Google account, please create one. Make sure to bring this ID and password with you to the workshop.
    2. If you do have a Google account, please make sure to bring this ID and password with you to the workshop.
    3. In your Edmodo account, click the Library icon. Then click on Google Drive. Allow Edmodo to connect with your Google Drive account.

Part I - 21st Century Teaching and Learning

Activity 1: Explore 21st Century Education

  • In your groups, collaboratively find and share information that informs the guiding questions included on the documents below.
  • Be ready to share how you could change your current classroom practices to be more "21st Century". Type your personal response as a thread to the corresponding Note in our Edmodo group.
  • *Extra Credit: Create a Wordle or Tagxedo from the text in your group document. Add it to your group's Google document.

Activity 2: Design a Technology Infused Lesson


Think of a lesson that you taught this past year and will teach again next year. Now that you have explored the concept of education in the 21st century and have seen a few of the technology tools available to you, redesign this lesson to update it to 21st century standards.

Use this template to redesign your lesson. Follow these steps:
  • Click on the words "this template" above to open a Google Doc.
  • Click on the File menu and select Make a copy.
  • Rename the document as follows: yourlastname-dti-nameoflesson.
  • Click OK.
  • Click the blue Share button in the upper right-hand corner.
  • In the Invite People text box, add my email address: (see front screen for the email address).
  • Leave the ability to edit the document.
  • You may add a message.
  • You may check Send a copy to myself.
  • Click the green Share & Save button.
  • Close the window (browser tab) containing the file entitled LessonPlanTemplate_21stCentury.
  • Begin redesigning your lesson.
